On a recent Saturday, a non-profit group I belong to volunteered to work at our town dump’s recycling center in order to make money. I volunteered to work from 7:30 AM to 1:30 PM.

People throw their trash into big containers, and put their cans, bottles, cardboard, etc. into recycle bins. They then bring their returnable cans and bottles that have a deposit on them to a separate recycling area and put them into a large open box.

Three of us took the returnables and sorted them into boxes and bags so they could be redeemed. I was amazed at the volume of items we sorted, and was grateful that it could be used again vs. being buried and taking numerous years to break down. The shed we were working in was about 100° F, and my clothes, socks and shoes were completely soaked. Even on a mild day it takes a lot of effort. I have a whole new appreciation for the amount of work it can take to help keep this planet healthy!
